The next conference of the Santander Biomedical Lectures program organized by IDIVAL, the University of Cantabria and IBBTEC will take place on the 26th of April. The session will be given by Jorge Galán and will be about:

“Pathogen restriction and host specificity: insights from the human pathogen Salmonella Typhi”.

Jorge Galán is Chair of the Microbial Pathogenesis Department at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven (Connecticut) and professor of Microbiology.

Prof. Jorge Galán got his veterinary medicine degree at National University of La Plata, Argentina. He got his doctorate in scientific research at the Cornell University, Ithaca.

In 2011, he won the Robert Koch Prize for his research on the molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of various bacteria, especially Salmonella and Campylobacter, the biochemical exchange of cells and pathogenic biological agents of diseases and the changes that bacteria cause in cells.

At present, his lab research interests focus on the molecular mechanisms by which the enteric pathogens Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. interact with their host.

Together, Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. are responsible for the vast majority of food-borne illnesses in the United States and the rest of the world. Although most often these bacteria cause self-limiting gastroenteritis, they can also cause life-threatening disease such as typhoid fever. To study these bacterial pathogens, we take a multidisciplinary approach including bacterial genetics, cell biology, immunology, and structural biology to define the functional and, when possible, the atomic interface between these pathogens and the host.

The conference, that will take place on the 26th of April, will be open to the general public and it will be at Marques de Valdecilla University Hospital, Salon Tellez (Pavilion 16) at 8.15am.

Jorge Galán will be in Santander throughout the day, to exchange experiences with members of the scientific and clinical community. Furthermore, he will visit the Research Centers of our community to talk with all the interested scientists.

Those professionals who would like to meet with Prof. Galan during his stay can contact with the department at gesval1@idival.org

The fourth edition of the workshops “¡VIVE LA CIENCIA!” took place in March. These workshops were about the initiation in biomedical research in which researchers of IDIVAL have participated.

The workshops were designed to promote the scientific vocations of local students in the biosanitary field. These workshops consisted of theorical-practice classes where IDIVAL’s researchers showed the scientific and research activities for the treatment and recovery of diseases. In this way, IDIVAL continues promoting students' interest in science through the direct contact with the research practice and to transmit on a practical way the abilities associated to the scientific work.

The Consejería de Educación, Cultura y Deporte of Cantabria Goverment collaborated on the Project and it was responsible for the paperwork with schools and with the selection of the students with the best academic results in science in Cantabria.

IDIVAL organized 4 different workshops about DNA, bacteria, neuroimage and the light and its technologies helping biomedical engineering

DNA Workshop. The aim was to show to the students the importance of the analysis of DNA in hospitals as a fundamental element to the diagnosis of diseases of genetic origin and in the biomedical research to understand the different pathologies and their treatments (personalized medicine).

Bacteria Workshop. The workshop consisted of taking 2 biological samples of the students and analyzing them through the microscope to examine the different bacterial morphologies and their movement.

Neuroimage Workshop. students made the exploration of an anthropomorphic mannequin and processed the acquired images.

The light and its technologies helping biomedical engineering. This workshop showed the opportunities offered by light and photonic technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. During the workshop experiments were carried out related to optical radiation parameters (refraction, absorption, polarization, etc.) and experimental demonstrations of equipment that are currently being used in diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the hospital environment.

With the aim to promote support for research, recruitment and consolidation of talent, IDIVAL opens the fourth edition of the NEXT-VAL (NEXT generation VALdecilla) grants for the development of research projects led by novice researchers, in order to facilitate the development of new generations of researchers.

Potential beneficiaries as main researchers of NEXT-VAL grants are those with a contractual relationship with the institutions that constitute Marqués de Valdecilla Research Institute (IDIVAL) and Cantabrian Health Service.

Main researchers must be less than 45 years of age and have never been funded as a principal researcher in a project obtained through a national or international competitive call or in the IDIVAL Next-Val or Inn-Val grants. Training specialists are excluded.

Research projects will have a minimum duration of 1 year and a maximum of 2 years and the maximum amount to be granted per project is € 25,000.

Documentation required:

– Standardized CV of each of the members of the research team.

– Report of the research project.

The deadline for submitting applications and the required documentation is May 15, 2018.
