The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cantabria will host on September 6 the first regional Symposium of the Small World Initiative project (SWI @ Spain).
This educational and social project, of international character, has been carried out for the first time in our region, by the IDIVAL Institute and the University of Cantabria. This project involved 170 secondary and high school students, through a strategy of learning and service to the community, to solve the problem of the increase of infectious diseases caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria and to encourage scientific vocations.
The Biomedical Research Institute Marques de Valdecilla (IDIVAL), has been incorporated into this project aimed at exploring the microbial biodiversity of soils, to discover new microorganisms that produce antibiotics.
The SWI program that has been carried out at the IDIVAL Institute during the 2017-2018 academic year has been directed by the research team of Dr. José Ramos Vivas, which belongs to the Clinical and Molecular Microbiology group. Next to him, María Lázaro Díez (Biotechnology), Itziar Chapartegui Iglesias (Biologist), César Álvarez Gutiérrez (Biotechnologist) and Carlota Carreira Nogueira (Experimental Sciences) participated.
The schools and professors participating in this course were: Marcos Bandín (Las Esclavas, Santander), Teófilo Marrón Souto and Ana Belén Alonso Rodríguez (La Salle, Santander), María Eugenia Moral, Sara Alonso Ruíz and José Alfonso Sánchez (IES La Marina, Bezana), Javier López and Alicia Gutiérrez (Calasanz-Escolapios, Santander), Cristina Fernández and Begoña Sierra (CEO of the Prince of Asturias, Ramales de la Victoria), Jesús Saíz, Clara Pérez and Marta Gordaliza (IES Besaya, Torrelavega).
On the part of the University of Cantabria, the project has been directed by Dr. Felix J. Sangari, professor of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology of the Faculty of Medicine, and researcher attached to the Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology of Cantabria (IBBTEC), which has coordinated to the first group of medical students that has participated in this project, at a national level. The team formed by Beatriz Iniesta, Jesus Fernandez Castilla, Annick Amling, and Marcos Ortiz Gutierrez, has worked with Santander's IES Cantabria, in collaboration with teachers Mar Crespo, Ana Manrique and Carmen González.
During this first regional Symposium, students from the different participating centers, accompanied by their professors, will present their results and a summary of the achievements made in terms of the isolation of bacteria producing new potential antibiotics will be made. There will be an awards ceremony for the best posters and oral communications made by the students and a diploma will be given to all participants.
The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports will be represented by Isabel Fernández Gutiérrez, General Director of Innovation and Educational Centers and by Carlos Cruz Vaquero, Head of the Technical Unit of Educational Innovation. The Scientific Culture Unit of the University of Cantabria will be represented by Beatriz Salas Vegue.
In this Symposium, a rebranding of the project in Spain will also be announced. For the first time a peninsular network of research centers and universities in Portugal will be integrated, and the project will gradually be called “Micro Mundo”. The logo has been created by the national project coordinator Victor Cid and presents bacteria with the colors of the Spanish and Portuguese flags.
Promoted by the University of Yale (United States) and present in Spain for 2 years through the Complutense University of Madrid, the SWI project is already implemented in 13 countries. In Spain, in addition to the IDIVAL and the UC, this program is developed in 24 research centers and universities where in this course they have involved more than 2000 secondary and high school students.

To give potential applicants as much time as possible to form consortia and prepare their proposals, IMI regularly publishes draft topic texts on this page several weeks before the official Call launch.
Draft topic texts are subject to consultations involving IMI's States Representatives Group, Scientific Committee, and the European Commission. They must also be approved by the IMI Governing Board. Depending on the results of the consultations and approval process, the final topic text may differ significantly from the draft versions initially published here, and some topics may not be included in a Call in the end.
The following topics are currently under consideration for inclusion in future IMI Calls for proposals.
The AMR Accelerator programme consists of three pillars under which multiple projects are expected:
Pillar A: Capability building network (CBN)
Pillar B: Tuberculosis drug development network (TBDDN)
Pillar C: Company-specific portfolio building networks (PBNs)
Currently, one two-stage topic is under consideration for inclusion in Pillar A; one two-stage topic is under consideration for inclusion in Pillar B; and one single-stage Call for proposals with seven topics is under consideration for inclusion in Pillar C.
The topics proposed for inclusion in the Pillar C single-stage Call for proposals are as follows. More information on these can be found in the draft Call text above.
Topic 1: Progress new assets (One pre new molecular entity (preNME) and one first-time-in-human (FTIH)) for tuberculosis that act synergistically with bedaquiline, cytochrome bc or cytochrome bd inhibitors
Topic 2: Progress novel assets (One first-time-in-human (FTIH)) for non-tubercular mycobacteria (NTM) that may act synergistically with bedaquiline, and cytochrome bc drugs
Topic 3: Discover and progress novel assets with new mechanisms of action (1 pre-new molecular entity (NME) for tuberculosis (TB) and 1-pre- new molecular entity (NME) for non-tubercular mycobacteria (NTM) and biomarkers for TB and NTM infection
Topic 4: Determination of gepotidacin levels in tonsils and prostatic tissue
Topic 5: Infection site targeting, antibiotic encapsulated in nanoparticles for treating extracellular bacterial infections
Topic 6: Functional ethionamide boosters. A novel combination for tuberculosis therapy
All information regarding future IMI Call topics is indicative and subject to change. Final information about future IMI Calls will be communicated after approval by the IMI Governing Board.

This article collects the work of the doctoral thesis of Sana Alibí, from Sousse (Tunisia), co-directed by Jesús Navas Méndez, professor of the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of Cantabria and researcher of the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases group of IDIVAL, and Jalel Boukadida, head of the Microbiology service of the Sousse hospital.
The appearance of the bacterium Corynebacterium striatum as an emerging pathogen in the aforementioned hospital and in the community is described, presenting multi-resistance, in particular to antibiotics widely used in clinical practice (beta-lactams, quinolones and macrolides). The conclusions of this work should be considered by the doctors at the time of establishing the treatment of infections by this pathogen. Although this type of bacteria continues to be sensitive to vancomycin, hospitals like Sousse do not have the economic resources to dispense this compound, resorting to more affordable ones such as some beta-lactams (amoxicillin). Resistance genes to amoxicillin (and other antibiotics) were found in a large part of the strains of C. striatum isolated in the Sousse hospital in recent years. In each case of infection by this pathogen, a study of the resistance profile must be made to establish the appropriate treatment.
This work was carried out in the faculty of Medicine and in the Microbiology service of Valdecilla during two stays of Sana Alibí (2014 and 2015), for which it received funding from the University of Sousse and from the University of Cantabria itself.
Scientific Reports is a multidisciplinary journal published in the open access modality by the Nature publishing group. The bibliometric records have certified that this article is among the 100 most read of the more than 2000 Microbiology articles published by this magazine in 2017, a circumstance that was communicated in a congratulatory message from the editor of the magazine to Jesús Navas, in quality of correspondence author and responsible for the publication of this work.
